Building your smart home is a real joy, collecting all the different hubs, gadgets and gizmos to make a fully automated home is a really satisfying feeling. Here at Techscheme, we thought we’d shine a light on a few of the different kinds of smart home tech that you can enjoy starting with lighting and thermostats. Remember buying through Techscheme means that you save up to 12% on the listed price with our partners at Currys, and that includes the sale prices!

Smart Lighting

There are a lot of different kinds of smart light bulbs, and it can be daunting making a selection. We’d recommend picking up a starter pack like the Phillips Hue A60 & Colour Ambience B22 Starter Kit, just to get you going. It comes with three light bulbs – capable of producing 16 million colours for any mood, a wireless bridge for connecting to them and a dimmer switch for when you want to control your lights without having your app to hand.

There’s a large range of smart lighting products at Techscheme from big players like Phillips, Hive, TP-link and LIFX. You can choose from great colour changing bulbs like the HIVE Active range, the Friends of Hue Bloom smart table lamp, as well as various strip lighting options and, of course, all the different kinds of light bulbs and fittings. Make sure you’re getting the right ones for your fixtures.

The different brands all come with their own apps that you can control them from. You can make your lights dimmer or brighter, change colours or control what time they come one, which is great if you’ve got a dark hallway when you first enter the house or want to make it look like you’re at home when you’ve gone away. They should also all work with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa so that they can truly become part of your smart home infrastructure and indeed there are many offers at Currys that let you purchase them together with your new smart lighting.

Smart Thermostats

The main thing to consider when picking up a smart thermostat is whether or not you’ll need help with installation. Currys have several packages that offer this service but it’s not too difficult to work out for yourself if you’re so minded. Smart thermostats connect wirelessly to your heating system meaning you can control it from the device, or your mobile.

The Nest Learning Thermostat and Hive Active Heating systems are good starting points. They’ll allow you to control and time every aspect of your home heating. You’ll be able to make sure the heating comes on before you get home from work, adjust the temperature from your armchair or turn it off once you leave the house.

In fact, one of the best things about this kind of automated system is that it will send you reminders to turn the heating on or off if you’ve forgotten, using your GPS to tell where you are in relation to the house. There are also systems in place to put your heating in sleep mode when you go off on holiday (so you don’t have to fiddle with it before you go and when you get back) or make sure that it comes on slightly during cold weather to protect your water pipes.
Picking the right smart home accessories is down to personal choice, but there are a number of excellent brands that specialise in this kind of thing at Currys. If you buy through Techscheme’s employee benefits scheme you can save up to 12% and spread the cost over up to 3 years, you just need to find out if your employer is signed up. If not, why not suggest it to them, we make the process as easy as possible.
