If you’re an Apple fan then you’ll know the iPhone 8 is upon us, and while the iPhone X is stealing all the headlines at the moment, we at Techscheme thought it would be good to take a look at the 8’s capabilities. It’s a brilliant new phone that deserves a little more time in the spotlight. Only fair given that it only came out in September. At Techscheme we partner with Apple and Currys PC World to deliver you the best deals on tech. Saving up to 12% on the retail price of your product through NI contributions.

iPhone 8/8 Plus: Design

On the outside, the iPhone 8 doesn’t look much different to the iPhone 7. The casing, however, has seen a significant redesign. Apple has replaced the old aluminium body and replaced it with a new glass back. This brings it up to speed with other flagship mobiles in the industry and allows for the first of the iPhone 8’s range of new functions – wireless charging.

The 8 Plus tells a similar story, albeit with a new Gold colour version that looks gorgeous. Outside of those changes though, you know what you’ll be getting – more of the rich, elegant design work that made the iPhone an icon.

iPhone 8/8 Plus: New Features

There are some great new features in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus besides wireless charging. True Tone brings an upgrade in the display, making colours seem warmer, sharper and brighter while also adjusting itself for ambient light, making it easier to see and use your screen in traditionally difficult conditions.

The cameras have also had some new features added. They’re fine-tuned for all the latest in AR apps and gaming but beyond that, there are upgrades to the picture taking capabilities as well.  The iPhone 8 now lets you record in 4K at 60fps and slow-motion recording is up to Full HD and 240fps. Those are impressive specs for any mobile.
The 8 Plus also sees a powerful new feature -  portrait lighting. It allows you to easily take impressive portraits by recognising facial contours and dynamically adjusting the lighting. This is all thanks to the new source of power under the hood the A11 Bionic chip.

iPhone 8 /8 Plus: Hardware & Battery Life

That new chip is brimming with processing power. It’s the first hexa-core processor we’ve seen in an Apple mobile and it speeds up everything. At a glance, it may be hard to notice any real differences to the iPhone  7, as the A10 chip did things pretty darn well itself. But cumulatively the A11 just adds a little bit of zip to all your processes.

The bigger, more intensive apps like Facebook, or some games, are where you’ll see the biggest difference in speed; this power jump means the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are far more set up for longevity. If you’re after a powerful new mobile that you can hold onto for a while, either of these are great choices.

Battery life in both mobiles is about what you’d expect from an iPhone; lasting you around a day on one charge, perhaps a bit longer for the 8 Plus thanks to its bigger battery size. Of course, wireless charging and the increased charging speed makes having to charge a far less involved process, so even when that battery is running low, it won’t be long before you’re up to speed again.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are great phones for someone looking for the best Apple has to offer, in a familiar iconic body. Upgrades to power and charging should see the phone last a good long while before you’re finally ready to upgrade. The iPhone X may be basking in the limelight but the iPhone 8 wouldn’t exist at all if it wasn’t worthy, trust us, it is.
