Huawei has just rocked the boat by dropping not one, but four incredible new smartphones under the Huawei Mate 20 range.
All four of these smartphones share similar traits, such as top of the range multi-camera setups, good displays, and high end hardware.
At different price points, some of the more expensive phones in the Huawei Mate 20 range have additional features like an in-display fingerprint sensor thrown into the mix.
There’s a lot to cover and the potential for you to save up to 12% on a new Huawei smartphone, so let’s delve right in.
The New Huawei Mate 20 Lineup Explained
In total, there are four new Huawei Mate 20 smartphones. The full list of these smartphones has been provided below.
- - Huawei Mate 20 Lite
- - Huawei Mate 20
- - Huawei Mate 20 X
- - Huawei Mate 20 Pro
As you’d expect, the Lite is a far more affordable budget version, the Mate 20 is the standard high end option, and the Pro and X are premium versions.
In the UK, the Mate 20 Pro and the Mate 20 Lite are the variants stocked by UK suppliers for the time being. We’ll still take a quick look at the other two variants for comparison.
Let’s start at the very bottom of the line with the Huawei Mate 20 Lite.
At £379, the Lite isn’t exactly as cheap as chips, but it’s a far way away from the current smartphone climate and the Mate 20 Pro’s £899 price tag.
Thankfully, paying £379 for the Huawei Mate 20 Lite will give you a device that feels closer in comparison to a high end phone than it does to a true budget choice.
This is mostly due to the high end specifications included with the Lite. You get a large 6.3" display at 1080x2340 pixels, 6GB of RAM, 3,750mAh battery capacity and the Kirin 710 chipset.
All of these specifications are a small downgrade from the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but not £500’s worth. The biggest corner that was cut was the camera.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro camera is set to be amongst the best in the world, as far as mobiles go, anyway. It’s no surprise that the cheaper variant has a slightly weaker showing in this department.
You still get a 20 megapixel primary snapper with an included 2 megapixel depth sensor, which is impressive for the price point.
So how does the Huawei Mate 20 Pro compare? Let’s take a look at the specifications:
- Three camera setup:
- - 40 megapixel main camera
- - 20 megapixel ultra wide camera
- - 8 megapixel telephoto
- - 8GB RAM
- - Kirin 980 chipset
- - 4,200 mAh
- - 6.39" 1440x3120 resolution display
The two major differences that stand out are the camera and the display. The camera uses a 40 megapixel main sensor alongside a new ultrawide camera and a telephoto lens. This is sort of a side step to the Huawei P20 Pro camera, which had the same but swapped out the ultra wide for a monochrome sensor.
If you didn’t know, the world renowned camera scoring website DxOMark ranked the P20 Pro as having the best smartphone camera in the world, so it makes sense the Mate 20 Pro will take that title once it is tested.
The Mate 20 Pro’s display is worth mentioning - it’s almost 4K - not quite, but it’s close. Finally, the Mate 20 Pro has a fingerprint sensor under the display.
So, in summary, you’re getting the choice between a well rounded device at an incredibly affordable price point, or a boosted version with an incredible camera and display, as well as small improvements across the board, for a premium price point.
For those curious, the Mate 20 is a very slight downgrade from the Mate 20 Pro - it has less megapixels but the same lenses, 6GB of RAM, and less resolution on its display.
The Mate X is a huge version of the Mate 20 - the same specs under the hood, but the display is 7.2 inches.
