Best choice for overall experience - Apple AirPods - £159

Apple AirPods
The Apple AirPods are arguably one of the best portable Bluetooth earbuds on the market. They hit so many areas perfectly. Whilst the design is a little different to the typical earbud, they are very comfortable and they fit firmly in your ear. This is important because these earbuds are completely free from wires. Even though the AirPods aren’t marketed as sweat proof, many long term users report that they also offer great resistance to sweat and hold up fine after extended workout sessions.
To make them safe, the earbuds can be stored in a small carry case, which also doubles up as the charging dock. If you own an iPhone, pairing and connecting both earbuds is done instantly, there’s no need to pair them together or fiddle with any settings. If you’re invested in the Apple ecosystem, you’ll love the cloud connectivity, too. If you connect to any Apple device, it will be easy to switch to them in the future, skipping over the frustrating Bluetooth pairing process.
The sound quality for the Apple AirPods is brilliant. You also have controls built into the AirPods that allow you to skip songs, speak to Siri, or pause your music by simply tapping the AirPods.

The best from Samsung that competes with the rest - Galaxy Buds - £139

Galaxy Buds
It's clear Samsung has taken inspiration from other buds with their latest Galaxy Buds launch, but there's no denying that it's a strong competitor in this fairly new space. The Galaxy Buds are wire-free, you get an included charging case, and you can even charge your buds wirelessly with the new Galaxy S10 if you own it. Without charging through the day, you can still get up to 6 hours use from a single charge. The charging case can hold up to an additional 7 hours too.
The sound quality on the Galaxy Buds is excellent, thanks in part to AKG, who helped Samsung to finetune the audio quality. Whilst there's no noise cancelling, there is an ambient mode that you can access with a tap, and with this you'll be able to hear your surroundings easier. You also get playback control and voice assistant control with taps, and the microphone quality for calls on the Galaxy Bud is excellent. Finally, the Galaxy Buds are sweatproof, making them suitable for long runs or intense sessions at the gym.

Best portable sports earphones - Bose SoundSport  - £114.00

Bose SoundSport
If you need something more suitable for long runs, jogs, or exercising in the gym, the Bose SoundSport is easily the most popular choice. This pair of earbuds has been specifically designed to stay firmly in your ear whilst you listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks. The wired neckband lets them sit comfortably and the wings add extra security to ensure they stay in your ear during more intense workouts.
The Bose SoundSport also features a very important sweat and water resistant design to keep all moisture away from the internal components. Bose also includes an app that lets you connect to different devices easier. With the app, you get more control over setting up your sound, volume, and you can also view your battery level. Physical buttons are included for playback control and voice assistant control.
As for sound quality, it should be no surprise that Bose did an excellent job as always. The Bose SoundSport earphones offer some strong bass, reasonable mids, and relaxed treble. The battery life doesn’t quite compete with something like the Apple AirPods, so they’re not an all day device. If you just need something for a workout, though, the Bose Soundsport earphones are perfect.

Best Apple AirPods alternative - Jabra Elite 65t - £149

Jabra Elite 65t
Next we have the Jabra Elite 65T earbuds. These are an excellent option for anybody interested in an alternative to the Apple AirPods. They feature a similar wire-free design and include a charging case, too. The Jabra Elite 65t are slightly cheaper at £149 and they also support voice commands via Siri, Google Now, and Alexa. You can customize the audio to your liking through the Jabra Sound+ app. These earbuds are also water and sweat resistant.
We have great things to say about the Jabra Elite 65t’s sound quality, too. These aren’t too bass-heavy like many popular choices today, but they hit the mids well. The equalizer available in the Jabra app can help to lift up the bass a little if you feel they’re a little lackluster in that area.

Best on-ear option - Bose QuietComfort QC35 II - £289

Bose QuietComfort QC35 II
Sometimes, earbuds just aren’t the best option for you. If you want a more durable, better quality audio option but still don’t want to sacrifice portability, consider the Bose QuietComfort QC35 IIs.
The sound quality on these is incredible, as is the build quality. The sound offered beats out most earbuds simply because the drivers are that much bigger. You get powerful bass, enjoyable mids, and treble that isn’t too harsh on the ears. If feels like a pair of headphones that you could wear all day. You can pair these headphones with the app and get access to noise cancelling settings, EQs, voice assistant control, and better quality voice calls. The battery life is also incredible. You can get up to 20 hours of listening. If you run out of battery, a quick 15 minute charge will give you another 2-3 hours of listening time.
These headphones also have a feature called Multi-Point. With this, you can connect to two devices at once, for example, an iPad and an iPhone. If you get a call, your video and sound will pause on your iPad and the sound of the call from your iPhone will play. Physical buttons are also available for controlling tracks, volume, and speaking to a voice assistant.
