Apple’s front-line operating system is due for an upgrade, join us for a deep dive into what’ll be powering the next-gen of iPhone’s and iPads.
This won't be news to anyone, but, Apple does operating systems well. The brains behind the hardware for the most influential tech companies has always been a knockout. Now, with iOS 12 incoming and the iOS 12 Beta open, we thought it would be good to take a look at the cool new features we can expect from the new OS.
iOS 12: Performance
Perhaps the most important thing in any OS upgrade is how it affects the general speed and overall performance of your mobile. There are some significant upgrades with iOS 12. Here are some numbers for you; swiping to Camera is now up to 70x faster, the keyboard display is up to 50x faster and even under a heavy workload, with a load of apps and web pages running, launching ups will be up to 2x faster.
It's the sort of performance that will delight you day-to-day. They're not the sort of things you notice until they aren't there but how many times have you sat with an old phone just waiting for it to load an app?
iOS12: Usability and Efficiency
Let’s move on to some of the cool efficiency features on the new Apple OS. Screen Time is a great feature for everybody, but might be especially interesting to those with little ones. It tracks the time you use for apps, the internet, and the on the devices overall which is great for helping you to make better decisions about how you or your kids spend their time.
Notifications have also seen an overhaul in iOS 12. From the lock screen you can turn off app notifications or send them to the notification centre, notification topics and message threads are grouped together to make them easier to check at a glance and Siri is now set up to give you suggestions on how to manage them based on how you interact. Apple has also added a do not disturb feature that can tell where you are, so you can go undisturbed for a meeting but when you leave they automatically come back on.
There are new photo sharing and photo search options to help you find and share the pics you want without having to scroll through your entire camera roll and Siri has also been equipped with a brand new set of shortcuts.
iOS 12: New Animojis, Memojis, FaceTime and Camera effects
Not resting on their Animoji successes you’ll find several more in iOS 12. Feel free to have fun with the new Koala, Tiger, Ghost or T-Rex while all Animojis have been given a bit of an upgrade to make them more expressive than ever. iOS 12 also introduces us to Memojis. These are customisable Animojis that you can make and tweak to represent you, perfect for a bit of fun, but also making sure you come across like you want to in messages.
FaceTime now supports group conversations with up to 32 people at once, while it's cleverly managed so that the tile of the person speaking gets larger so that you don't lose track. Lastly, camera effects have been added to the Messages app. This means you can quickly create and share a photo or video with Animoji, Memoji, cool filters, animated text effects, fun stickers and host of other cool things.
iOS 12: Other new features
We can’t get through everything in detail but iOS 12 has a huge range of new features coming to iPhones and iPads. ARKit2 is great for developers and lets you send objects through mail or messages to be viewed on the other side. Apple Books, Apple New, Stocks and CarPlay have all seen upgrades. Siri is smarter than ever, voice memos are making their way over to iPad while new security features like automatic strong passwords and security-code autofill should leave you feeling safer than ever with your new iPhone or iPad.
That’s the gist of it but you can find out even more about iOS 12’s new features from the Apple website.
