Apple has really outdone themselves with the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. The new Apple smartphones offer the same elegant display and design we first saw on the iPhone X but with new upgrades and features.
With bigger and more beautiful displays, better hardware, a new iOS update, and an opportunity to save up to 12% on a new iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max - there’s a lot to talk about.
iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max Display
Apple held onto their former iPhone design for a long time. Whilst it became slimmer and sleeker each year, very little changed aesthetics-wise – and it didn’t need too.
Since the iPhone X came along, we’re all obsessed with beautiful full-screen devices with notches.
Both the iPhone XS and XS Max feature the new display. As the names suggest, the XS Max is larger, coming in at 6.5 inches. The iPhone XS, on the other hand, has a 5.8-inch display, which still isn’t remotely small.
Both have stunning Super AMOLED displays and similar resolutions - the pixel density on both is a high 458 PPI.
Perhaps the most exciting improvement is the 120Hz refresh rate - with this, images will feel twice as fluid as they were on the iPhone X.
What’s Changed Under the Hood?
The new XS and XS Max are essentially a great sequel to the iPhone X.
When comparing the XS and XS Max to the original iPhone X, we can see a number of improvements. Firstly, we have the new A12 Bionic chip and 4GB of RAM; meaning better overall performance and more multitasking potential. Apple claims a 15% performance boost on the new chips, which is not an understatement when you consider how lightning fast the previous A11 chip was.
The new iPhone XS lineup also gets full IP68 protection. This is great news for those prone to dropping their iPhone in water as there’s even less chance for water damage - even if you drop it in the pool.
Whilst the camera on the new Apple smartphones may look the same and even have the same specifications as the iPhone X, there are notable improvements when it’s put to the test. This includes Smart HDR; a new sensor which creates better image fidelity, greater colour accuracy and reduced noise in low-light shots. What’s more - portrait mode photos look even more professional thanks to a sophisticated background blur which can be adjusted. Tests show that the iPhone XS cameras sit above all other smartphones, besides the legendary Huawei P20 Pro.
What’s New On iOS 12?
Every year, alongside the new iPhone release, we also get a brand-new iOS update. This time, we've moved to iOS 12 and there are some key improvements.
Firstly, performance has been a clear focus for Apple this year - the fluidity for everything from launching apps to typing on the keyboard has been worked upon.
As for new features, you can now enjoy group FaceTime, new Memojis, better notifications, and more control in the photos and camera apps.
iPhone XS vs iPhone XS Max Pricing
It should come as no surprise that the latest iPhone range isn’t cheap. Apple has perfected the premium smartphone category. Put simply, you really have to pay to get the best of the best. The 64GB and 256GB configurations of iPhone Xs retain the same RRP the iPhone X had last year at launch, despite great improvements.
There is a higher 512GB storage version available for both the XS and XS Max which adds to the overall cost.
Besides the change in storage, all models offer the same specifications.
