11/19/2018 12:00:20 PM | with 0 comments

This year, Microsoft is back with the Surface Laptop 2 - it hits many of the great aspects that the previous product did but with some slight adjustments. And, most importantly, everything from the base model to the more expensive options have seen new upgrades for immense increased hardware power.

Why the Surface Laptop 2 is a true contender to the MacBook Air

Something that shines through with the Surface Laptop 2 is that when something is done so perfectly the first time, it just doesn’t need to be touched again. To us, the Surface Laptop 2’s mostly unchanged design is a perfect example of that.

Just like the new MacBook Air, the Surface Laptop 2 is slim, lightweight, and a marvel of modern day computing power. Microsoft did add a new matte black version to the range, but besides that, you'll be immediately familiar with the look, design, and feel of the Surface Laptop 2 if you ever used the first generation model.

It may look similar, but the new keyboard has been an interesting point of discussion. Microsoft has impressed us with the new faster response time of the keyboard on the Surface 2. If you are somebody that currently slams their fingers down onto the keys of your current laptop, your fingers will thank you for using the Surface Laptop 2 keyboard. I cannot stress enough how great it is to type on in comparison to many other laptops.

Besides the keyboard change, not much else has been changed that’s immediately noticeable. This brings us to improvements made to the interior hardware.

Surface Laptop 2’s Standout Features & Specs

The same striking 3:2 aspect ratio makes a return on the 13.5 inch display, with the same 2256 x 1504 resolution. Microsoft has worked to make the contrast even better, though, so it'll be even more suited for everything graphical related, from viewing movies to editing videos and images.

On the inside, it's a completely different story. We've got the 8th generation of Intel i5 and i7 CPUs that boast an 85% speed increase in comparison to the chipset used last year. A much needed change to the base model will mean that even the cheapest option has 8GB of RAM, and upgrades to 16GB is possible. For storage, it’s SSD all the way, starting at 128GB and going up to a massive 1TB.

With the Surface Laptop 2 being so thin, Microsoft is relying on the graphics from the Intel processor again, this time it's using Intel UHD 620 graphics. It’s not great for gaming, but this is not what the Surface Laptop 2 is about. The Surface Laptop 2 is an ultralight that can boast enough processing power to be a great work machine.

One aspect of the Surface Laptop 2 that most people are surprised about is no change to the ports. Whilst even Apple has adopted the USB-C on their new 2018 Macbook Air, Microsoft is yet to take the change. It's not like they couldn't, either, as the Surface Laptop 2 still has a mini DisplayPort, which we're sure won't see as much use as a USB-C or even a Thunderbolt 3 port would.

For security, Microsoft opted to push their Windows Hello option, It works blazingly fast, only requiring the owner to look at their laptop screen to unlock it - you’ll be from idle to back to your work within milliseconds.

Finally, before moving on to the price, let’s talk about the battery life. The Surface Laptop 2 has a very impressive battery. A solid 10/10 goes to Microsoft, who market their Surface Laptop 2 as capable of running video for 14 hours and 30 minutes on a single charge. No matter what you are doing, a day's work without time to charge is a reality if you leave home with 100% battery.
