At MWC this year, Sony launched three new phones, all of which have a new 21:9 cinematic display. The top tier device, the Xperia 1, also features a 4K resolution. Here’s a look at this new lineup from Sony, their expected prices, and how they’ve taken a surprising approach to be different in 2019.

Sony’s New Xperia Range Is Refreshingly Impressive

Xperia 1

We’ll start with Sony’s new Xperia 1 flagship smartphone. This device is jam packed with features to make watching videos and playing games a better experience on mobile than ever before. There are two standout features that make this possible.

Firstly, the Xperia 1 flagship has a 4K resolution, boasting more pixels than nearly every other major flagship on the market right now.

The Xperia 1 also has a large 6.5 inch display, but it's a little different to other displays. It's far taller and thinner. This is because it has an aspect ratio of 21:9. This is considered an ultrawide display and it's the first time we've seen it on a popular smartphone. In the past, many manufacturers moved from the traditional 16:9 design to 18:9, which allowed devices to be slightly narrower whilst still featuring big displays. The Xperia 1 takes that up a notch. And, speaking of notches, there's not one in sight on the Xperia 1.

Xperia 10

Up next, we have the Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus. Both of these are more affordable versions of the Xperia 1. Both devices have the same 21:9 aspect ratio, but the displays aren’t as high quality. The Xperia 10 Plus has the same 6.5 inch display size, whilst the Xperia 10 has a 6 inch display. Each display still has a resolution of 1080x2520 though, which is still very reasonable.

In terms of specifications between the three devices, this is how they differ:

  • Xperia 1 - 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 855
  • Xperia 10 Plus - 4GB RAM, Snapdragon 636
  • Xperia 10 - 4GB RAM, Snapdragon 630

The Snapdragon 6 series is an excellent chipset used in more affordable devices, but it’s admittedly not quite at the same level as the blazingly fast new Snapdragon 855.
The Xperia 10 and 10 Plus have the same camera setups. You get a single 8 megapixel selfie camera, and then a dual 13MP/8MP camera on the back. The two sensors are for wide angle mode and telephoto mode.

The Xperia 1, on the other hand, has a more powerful 8MP selfie camera with HDR. On the back, you get three camera sensors. The main 12 megapixel wide angle sensor, a 12 megapixel telephoto sensor, and an additional 12 megapixel ultrawide.

It’s strange that Sony aren’t pushing their camera game harder considering the majority of other smartphones actually use Sony camera sensors in their smartphones. Either way, we’d hope the performance to be at least reasonable compared to the competition.
