How to pick an eco-friendly dishwasher
Our planet’s a precious resource and we all want to do our bit, even if it’s with the tech we buy. Did you know you can make a difference by opting for an eco-friendly dishwasher?
The more energy we use, the more carbon emissions are produced to generate that energy. And carbon emissions lead to global warming. Getting the clean water in our pipes takes energy and time too so making sure we don’t waste that water is an important way of looking after our planet.
Of course, dishwashers use energy and water. That’s unavoidable! But by picking the right dishwasher, you can minimise how much of each of those resources you’re using.
There’s another bonus too. An eco-friendly dishwasher can reduce how much you pay for your utilities. Less water and less energy should be cheaper, after all. So, here are a few questions to ask before you choose a dishwasher.
Should I use a dishwasher or handwash?
While you might not expect this to be the case, using a dishwasher actually saves water. In fact, a newer energy certified dishwasher can as use as little as 3 gallons per load compared to a huge 27 gallons for handwashing.
So put down the cloth and rubber gloves. It’s time to put those dishes in the machine and come back to sparkling clean crockery. All while knowing you’re doing your bit for the environment.
Does my dishwasher have an eco setting?
An eco mode or setting is a quick way to slash your energy and water use, often by 20-40%!
Normally, a dishwasher will heat your water up to a high temperature to tackle grease and dirt, using up quite a bit of energy. But you don’t always need such an intense wash.
Most of the time our dishes are only lightly used, or we might have soaked and rinsed them before putting them in the dishwasher. The eco setting lowers your wash and rinse temperatures while still targeting the dirtier items. And it reduces the amount of water used too.
Is my dishwasher the right size?
You might think a bigger machine would increase how much energy you use. Instead, investing in a larger dishwasher can be more sustainable.
Why? Because if you’re running your dishwasher multiple times to keep up with everything you’re using, you’re actually using far more energy than if you only ran a bigger dishwasher once.
Don’t get a machine that’s bigger than you need though; a dishwasher is most energy-efficient when it’s at full capacity. So have a think about your family’s size and lifestyle before you buy.
